Kyoto/London − Kyocera is getting a new facility: KYOCERA Fineceramics Medical GmbH (KFMG), which was founded in April and specialises in the production of high-quality ceramic ball heads for hip prostheses and other implant applications, will in future manufacture its products in Waiblingen, near Stuttgart, Germany. The ground-breaking ceremony took place on 4 October and construction is due to be completed by September 2025.
Ultra-modern building design
The entire site covers 10,800 m2, 5,400 m2 of which is earmarked for the production facility, which is due to be completed by July 2025. A further 1,400 m2 will be used for the office building, which has been designed as an open-plan office. This will provide space for up to 100 employees. ‘A state-of-the-art site is being built in Waiblingen and production will be extensively automated. The building has also been designed to meet or even exceed the latest strict regulations with regard to carbon neutral production, ESG standardisation, DGNB and/or LEED certification. This has provided us with the perfect basis for our company’s success. It is here that we will meet the growing demand for medical ceramic solutions,’ explains Dr Carsten Rußner, President of KYOCERA Fineceramics Medical GmbH and KYOCERA Fineceramics Europe GmbH. The company is investing a total of €30 million in the first phase of construction at the site, with a second construction phase with a total investment of between €20 and 30 million to follow. The first deliveries of the products that will be manufactured here are scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
The management team, comprising Dr Fabian Preuss and Uwe Kemmer, is convinced that the investment will pay off: "After decades of successfully selling Kyocera’s medical technology products in Japan, the new site will now also give us a presence in the medical sector in Europe and enable us to offer our sustainable solutions for medical technology applications made of ceramics."
Kunihiko Ueki, President of KYOCERA Europe GmbH, is also delighted with the new facility: "Kyocera aims to make people’s lives easier with every new idea. This requires progress and innovation, which our engineers pursue with enthusiasm on a daily basis. We will also apply this philosophy to production at the Waiblingen facility in order to be able to offer medical ceramic solutions across Europe and around the world."
